"An existential masterwork that, like life, is equal parts atrocity and delights."—Olivie Blake, New York Times bestselling author of Masters of Death
Lucky Day is the latest from Chuck Tingle, USA Today bestselling author of Camp Damascus and Bury Your Gays, where one woman must go up against horrifying odds to save the world.
Four years ago, an unthinkable disaster occurred. In what was later known as the Low-Probability Event, eight million people were killed in a single day, each of them dying in improbable, bizarre ways: strangled by balloon ropes, torn apart by exploding manhole covers, attacked by a chimpanzee wielding a typewriter. A day of freak accidents that proved anything is possible, no matter the odds. Luck is real now, and it's not always good.
Vera, a former statistics and probability professor, lost everything that day, and she still struggles to make sense of the unbelievable catastrophe. To her, the LPE proved that the God of Order is dead and nothing matters anymore.
When Special Agent Layne shows up on Vera's doorstep, she learns he's investigating a suspiciously—and statistically impossibly—lucky casino. He needs her help to prove the casino's success is connected to the deaths of millions, and it's Vera's last chance to make sense of a world that doesn't.
Because what's happening in Vegas isn't staying there, and she's the only thing that stands between the world and another deadly improbability.

Vera, a bisexual professor of statistics, saw all the meaning drain out of her life the day of the Low Probability Event, when millions of people lost their lives in improbable accidents. She is forced into caring, however, when annoyingly perky federal agent Layne seeks her help to unravel the secrets of a ridiculously lucky casino--the same one Vera was investigating before the LPE. Vera and Layne must figure out the source of the casino's good fortune before its tipping of the scales of chance rips the whole world apart. Tingle (Bury Your Gays) continues to explore how love makes meaning in a narrative that reads like Looney Tunes and the X-Files on a field trip through cosmic horror. With her accurately depicted depression and suicidal ideation, Vera's character is an incisive means to explore the importance of connection: her choosing to care is behind every reveal. Layne's sunny/deadly personality makes him an instant scene-stealer. Side plots about the abuses that are possible without government oversight and about recovering from a major catastrophe are both relevant and vital. Combining slapstick gags with real-world physics is a brilliant source of horror. VERDICT The clearest expression of Tingle's "love is real" philosophy, in a brutal, bloody, and cosmically joyful outing. A must-buy for any horror collection.--Katherine Sleyko

Tingle's latest (after Bury Your Gays, 2024) is an absurd romp, but underneath the off-the-wall mayhem lies his most sophisticated work to date. Vera, a statistics professor, is celebrating the release of her first book--about a casino in Las Vegas where, impossibly, the odds are tipped in the visitors' favor--when the world experiences the Low Probability Event (LPE), a convergence of the most unlikely things, that kills almost eight million people. Four years later, as Vera is still struggling to come to terms with what happened, Federal LPE Agent Layne convinces her to join the investigation into how the casino is involved. Vera must overcome her own worst fears and use her mathematical gifts to rebalance the scales of luck before it is too late. Tingle brilliantly allows the more bonkers and visceral scenes to give readers the space and time necessary to emotionally handle the existentially bleak and terrifying reality staring them in the face. Even if "nothing" matters, readers know not to fear because love always wins when Tingle is in charge. For fans of satirical, tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek speculative works as wide ranging as Jasper Fforde's Lost in a Good Book (2002), Percival Everett's Dr. No (2022), and the novels of Jason Pargin.
